Elige bien tus herramientas y elígelas bien.

The Year of Code

I have been struggling coding again.

But this year is maaa year!!!

I’ve been trying to being free. I mean what is more cool than to be wherever I want in the world and being able to earn enough money to keep my business in track and support myself.

Imagine this.. Me, my laptop and a good internet… but the way the internet is always a pain in the ass… and it sucks a lot of time. But just bear with me and imagine the picture… I’m just hoping someday the internet reception for aerospace travels had a better internet connection someday.

I’ve been letting my fears to take over me and push me down… I mean after 4 years being in management positions that code thing just goes to the wind. So right know I’m working so that skills can come back again.

And for doing that I’m managing some projects every month. So some of them are these.

CSS challenge

I love this 365psd.com challenge, consist to structure from Photoshop to HTML, CSS and Javascript. One challenge per day, every year.. so it is a good start.

PHP cheat sheet

Like the phrases say it, just to have different functionalities in PHP for different projects.

Python cheat sheet

The other day I have a client that ask me for a software development, so I need it to take over again. The main purpose as PHP is just to have like simple functionalities that I can re-used for different projects

id Digital Design

Yup, finally I’m launching a digital agency. Hoping to someday it can sustain by themselves with a good administration panel for clients in Guadalajara, New York, Tijuana and hope other places someday.

Ooh man I can’t wait to earn enough money to pay for a good co-working space. And I think coding skills can open doors for new opportunities.

So like a Zed A. Shaw said… Just shut up and code!!.. so here we go…

First time developing a game… this is the story

A weekend ago I decide to participate in my first video game hackathon ever.

Through Skillcrush I found this special hackathon #GAMERella ”Well what better oportunity to participate and learn for the first time how to make a video game in a weekend” I said.

“If my sister thinks I’m a geek, has no idea” I thought after being just for a few minutes in the room.

Honestly I was pretty scare at first. It wasn’t my usual enviroment you know, Meetups, Hackathons, events but focused always on the web. Never had developed a game before man! and I actually don’t know if I consider myself a gamer… ok I’m not.

I mean, of course I can stick with a game once I start playing it … hi Dinner Dash! .. hi Uncharted 2!. But talk about them and nail it, nah! not honestly.

But anyway, when I arrived I felt like a fish out of water. But at least one of the reasons why I decided to live for a while outside my country it was because experiencing new things.

The video game center of the NYU received the hackathon #GAMERella Jam organized by CodeLiberation.org that challenged us in the creation of a video game with the plataform of our choice with the topic “Boss Up”… I had to ask what they mean with that, ‘cause I was sure it was more like an american slang. But anyway I get it and started.

I was very lucky to start talking with two guys who share me their ideas, I had no idea where to start. And in the end we were 4 people talking about video games and what can be possible to build. One was a passionate musician that loves video games, other girl with experience in Unity who has a mini piano and is an art creator, and other guy with experience in game developing. And me? well I was there just for the food… nah of course not! ”You know what?, I’m here to learn, if you guys need me to learn Unity I will learn the basics to participate somehow “ I said.

Ok so you will wonder probably I dunno what is Unity?… So Unity is a game engine where you can create and code video games for PC, Android, Play Station Xbox, Wii, etc. Ok cool let’s continue!

The ideas began to emerge. Focusing on the fact that two of the teammates brought  a cello a mini-piano. So we could use it to make a game focused on music. Then we start joining the concept and the theme “Boss Up”…

And this is how Lucent born:

Roman (@ChaoticFormula): Game Design and Animation

Greg (@cosmoddd): Music, Sound mixing and Main Level Designer

Seori (@edwardyaoihands): Sound Effects and assitant Level Designer

Sam (@SnowHydra): Programming and Special Effects

Irina (@irimaya): Production and UI graphics

lucent-by-@hentaiphd

Here is a picture of my team

I learned a lot. To use Unity, to see how Unity crash one time and again. A contribution so different but as complementary from each of the talents of my team. But mostly I learned about the creative process, design and code for the production of a video game.

Another thing that I noticed, my computer is not suitable for the development of video games, their capacity is very limited. It works great for my web projects, but not so much  for game development.

And with you the video game here: LUCENT

What is next? Honestly I liked the experience, I’m already registered for my class of Unity and who knows, maybe in the future to develop a video game business or invest in them, that would be pretty cool.

Only time will tell.

My first month in New York City: The Subway

One day after long hours working at a cafe, I turn to the door to start my journey back home, when suddenly I feel how I am attacked by a wave of heat I could barely breathe and felt nausea. I suppose the effect of the air conditioning inside the cafe and the ambient heat shock me.

A few hours later when to a pharmacy to buy a Pepto-Bismol, until then I began to recover the color in my face. My self-diagnosed conclusion as a doctor that I’m not, was that probably I was getting used to the food and water of New York City.

Maybe wasn’t the cause, but I found it a good introduction to begin to tell my story about my first month living in New York.

There are so many stories that I don’t know where to start.

Maybe I should start my sordid adventures in the subway of New York.

Uptown or Dowtown, if it is local or express, weekends that line is out of service, at nights is out of service, must grab an alternative line, some lines are closed for maintenance, announcing changes that you can barely hear through speakers, but most of the times you are just simply a newbie in the subway of New York City.

I always feel proud to adapt easily to the use of public transportation in new cities. But this month has been an exception, I had never lost so much as in this city. But I guess is a way how the city welcomes new people, I say this because apparently several people that already have been living here for a while went through the same thing, so I don’t feel so embarrassed now.

The metro is definitely an experience in New York City. It is the most efficient way to reach any destination in Manhattan, Queens, Bronx and Brooklyn.

Within the metro you can hear all kinds of languages. Here a list of the most common languages that I have heard in the subway in New York; English, Mandarin, Spanish, Russian, French, Korean, at least which I can differentiate.

One occasion I saw a group of 6 teenage boys were walking between each car, bringing a big radio with hip-hop music and doing a little choreography between the tubes of the subway, kinda urban hip-hop style dance poll.

Another day I heard an asian lady screaming to another asian lady that got off the train, and the one that stands inside the train start saying something in mandarin but with a very intense discussion. Then another random asian man began to say something to this lady in mandarin but like screaming and laughing. Then another asian couple joins the conversation-discussion. Then all asian people got off the next metro station and people who we were clearly not asian thinking “What just happened here!!!” Because we did not understand a word of what they were discussing, it was very unique.

Another thing I’ve noticed is that people doesn’t offer seats very often. I mean, in Guadalajara it is an unwritten rule that a pregnant woman or with child would be referred to offer a seat. Maybe I’ve been on 5 situations in which 3 are not offered a seat. But perhaps the context is different, because twice I being denied to offer help to down stairs to mothers with stroller or girls with suitcases. They are friendly, not get me wrong, but I guess they are very independent, I have no idea, but it is something that surprises me.

Also there are posters announcing to be aware of the platform train, where the statistics says that every years they’re 50 deaths because people to get to close to the train when is arriving. So suddenly I get nervous when I see people walking on the yellow lines that mark the edge of the platform.

But surely what I love about traveling in the New York subway is to watch people traveling in it. Curiously, depending on the area where you are, you’ll find the clothes and color of people are different. It feels like you traveled to several countries in one wagon. I love seeing the different features of origin of each person, each with its own essence of beauty, it very unique and makes me wonder what are their jobs? where are they come from?, what’s their story?.

Some facts*:

  • Metro users: 11’855,900

Sometimes I want NORMAL things & sometimes I DON’T

Born, grow, reproduce and die.

Get the best notes in school, have a remunerable job, meet the guy of my dreams, form a family, buy a car, buy a house, have a dog, work and work until retired and die.

I’m not sure if that’s for me.

Yes sometimes I want a NORMAL relationship, have my own family, be a mom, be with my hubbie… oooh but What a Wonderful Life! But then I DON’T, I don’t want nothing from that, I just wanna be free don’t have the responsibility to take care of someone, I want wind blow in my face, be the owner of my time and just to be happy.

Is the search of something else? There’s a lot of things I wanna do before nothing happens.

Sometimes I want conformity, I think things would be simpler. But then I feel fire inside me (metaphorically) that doesn’t leave me alone, that doesn’t let me to desire normal things.

One day a friend told me:
– Is the search for those who have the courage to question the lifestyle imposed on us. Some will always argue between the chosen and the imposition

Sometimes is hard and melancholic to see what other people are accomplished in their personal life, when you haven’t. But I trust my guts to discover myself, travel, learn, be in constant movement and to know what I want.

Time, here we go!

Audiophile

One of that persons that you can not surprise ‘cause they know everything about music, his dedication is music, his love is music.

That’s awesome!

How they can take you to a path where you can really taste music, not just eat it, but really taste it.

Music, the rhythm of life.

To lose yourself in the percussion, to differentiate between a guitar and a base. To suspire with the violin. Man!

How the incredibility of creators can put an emotion in a lyric or a melody.

Music, the engine of imagination and creativity.
